The district encompasses of a village that was constructed in response to the arrival of the railroad in the area. The district is predominantly rural in character, but there is a cluster of public buildings, including a church and the Becket Arts Center at its heart. Most buildings in the district were built in the 1840s in the Greek Revival style.
